Swiss household employment
13. Monatslohn: the thirteenth salary
Also written: 13. Monatslohn · 13e salaire · 13a mensilità
Is a thirteenth salary compulsory?
No. A thirteenth month salary is not a statutory entitlement in Switzerland. It exists where a contract, a collective agreement or a standard contract provides for it, and it is common in some sectors and absent in others.
What it means if you employ someone at home
For household employment it is a matter of agreement. If you promise it in the contract it becomes binding, so write down whether it is included and how it is calculated for part time hours.
You are the employer. With Helpore Admin, Helpore prepares a contract if you want one and, under your signed power of attorney, files the declarations and produces the payslip in your name; with Admin Light, Helpore prepares the maths and the documents and you file and pay. Both are optional. You stay the employer in every case and can also do all of this yourself.
Common questions
Do I have to pay one?
Not unless you agreed to. If it is in the contract, it is owed.
How is it calculated for hourly work?
Usually pro rata on the wages actually earned, and it should be stated that way in the contract to avoid a dispute later.
