The latest official canton rent table was published by the Federal Statistical Office on 5 March 2026. The rents in it are for 2024. On the federal minimum for unskilled domestic work in force that year, CHF 19.95 an hour, the average net rent of an occupied 3 room home equals 46.4 hours in Jura and 94.0 hours in Zug. Zug is about twice Jura because CHF 1,875 divided by CHF 926 is 2.02. The ranking applies one federal floor to all 25 entries, so the difference is the rent. It is not a claim that every canton sets the same binding minimum wage. Geneva has its own wage and is not in the ranking.
From 2011 to 2024, hours rose in 23 of the 25 cantons on the federal floor. They fell only in Nidwalden, by 1.4 hours, and Appenzell Innerrhoden, by 3.2 hours. The unskilled federal floor rose from CHF 18.20 to CHF 19.95. Rents rose faster.
For 2 rooms in the same year and at the same federal floor, Jura equals 43.3 hours and Zug 79.2 hours. The rent ratio is 1.83, from CHF 1,579 divided by CHF 864.

Federal-floor ranking, most to least
The same federal floor is applied to all 25 entries, so the hours reflect the rents. This does not say that every canton has the same binding wage.
Geneva, shown separately: its own domestic minimum wage was CHF 24.32 in 2024. Its average 3 room rent was CHF 1,483, equal to 61.0 hours. The dearer hour makes the number lower, so it is not comparable with the federal ranking. At its own wage Geneva sits with the middle, near Uri and Solothurn.

Method
Formula. Hours equal average monthly net rent divided by the hourly wage for that year. The calculation uses gross wage without the 8.33 percent holiday supplement or employer contributions.
Rent. Federal Statistical Office table je-d-09.03.03.01, average net rent of occupied tenant and cooperative dwellings by canton and number of rooms. The latest table was published on 5 March 2026 and contains rent values through 2024. It covers the housing stock, not new lets, and excludes heating and service charges. No rent was estimated or interpolated.
Federal-floor ranking. The article ranks 25 cantons by applying the same federal unskilled floor to every rent. The rates are CHF 18.20 from 2011 to 2013, CHF 18.55 from 2014 to 2016, CHF 18.90 from 2017 to 2019, CHF 19.20 from 2020 to 2022, CHF 19.50 in 2023 and CHF 19.95 in 2024, as cited in AS 2010 5053, AS 2013 4109, AS 2016 4825, AS 2019 4107, AS 2022 809 and AS 2023 771. This common comparison rate is not a claim that every canton sets the same binding wage.
Geneva. Only Geneva's sourced, unqualified domestic-work wage is shown separately: CHF 19.00 in 2014 and 2015, CHF 19.25 in 2016 and 2017, CHF 19.50 in 2018 and 2019, CHF 23.14 in 2021, CHF 23.27 in 2022, CHF 24.00 in 2023 and CHF 24.32 in 2024. The rate changed on 1 November 2020 from CHF 19.50 to CHF 23.00, so a single 2020 point would be false. There are no Geneva points from 2011 to 2013 and no experienced or EFZ Geneva rates.
Rounding and data. Rent divided by wage is kept to two decimals in the dataset, then rounded half up to one decimal on the page. The list, chart labels and table use that same rule. The CSV dataset keeps two decimals.
