UVG: compulsory accident insurance

What is the UVG?

The UVG (LAA in French, LAINF in Italian) is the federal law on accident insurance. Every employee in Switzerland must be insured against accidents at work, and against accidents outside work once they reach eight hours a week with the same employer. The employer takes out the policy.

What it means if you employ someone at home

You insure the person who works in your home, not yourself. Occupational cover is always the employer's cost. Non occupational cover becomes compulsory from eight hours a week and its premium may be deducted from the wage.

Common questions

My cleaner comes three hours a week. Do I still need accident insurance?

Yes for accidents at work, which is compulsory from the first hour. Non occupational cover becomes compulsory once the person reaches eight hours a week with you.

Does my household liability policy cover this?

No. Household liability covers damage you cause to others. Accident insurance for an employee is a separate compulsory policy in the employee's name.
