## The story in 40 seconds

New Federal Statistical Office housing data contain a nationwide result that the official release did not highlight.

Between the end of 2024 and the end of 2025, occupied dwellings in single-family houses with at least one registered resident aged 65 or older increased by **6,573**. The corresponding group with no resident aged 65 or older decreased by **5,085**.

The same split appeared in **all 26 cantons**. This was the first 26-of-26 result in the available annual comparisons from 2014 to 2025.

The shift is broader than single-family homes. Across all building categories, occupied dwellings in which every registered household member was aged 65 or older represented **53.0% of Switzerland's net increase in occupied dwellings** in 2025. Their number reached **959,382**.

## What the figures count

The source counts occupied dwellings by the age composition of their registered private households. It does not count purchases, ownership, newly built homes, people living alone, care needs or household-help use. A dwelling can change group when a resident turns 65 or when household composition, occupancy or the dwelling stock changes.
